Why Philosophy Is Still Necessary - 986 Words

As I was attempting to brain storm for this assignment, I ran out of ideas so I decided to read the prompt again and again for inspiration and hopefully some new ideas. That is when I realized that the prompt itself had the answer that I was looking for. My answer was sitting there waiting for me in the last sentence of the prompt, â€Å"The question whether Philosophy is still necessary or not remains an intriguing question, triggering different position.† Philosophy is still necessary in our modern and scientific world today because Philosophy is the intriguing question that is triggered by several events in different positions in our daily lives. In our fast paced world today, people sometimes tend to want answers all the time without even having to ask questions and unfortunately, technology, media and social media have made that possible. If we are to agree to define Philosophy as the questioning of ourselves and our surroundings in order to acquire knowledge, we would co me to realize that without Philosophy we would be living a clueless life. If it was not for Philosophy and the concept of asking questions, then Isaac Newton would have walked away from that tree to see a doctor because an apple fell on his head. However, he started questioning why the apple fell and going after what had made the apple move in the first place. Movie Review Fight Club

Movie description An adaptation of a novel of the same name authored by Chuck Palahniuk in 1996, the American film â€Å"Fight Club† was released three years later in 1999. This uniquely grotesque storyline was brought to life on the big screen by director David Fincher and some of Hollywood’s most profound actors; Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter. The box office disappointment raised the eyebrows of critics as â€Å"Fight Club† became the most controversially talked about films. According to academic critics, the 1999 film portrays instances of consumerism and European fascism.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Movie Review: Fight Club specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The film’s main characters; the nameless narrator (Norton), an employee of a travelling automobile company suffers from insomnia, Tyler Durden (Pitt), a soap salesman, who is a figment of the nameless narr ator’s imagination and Marla Singer (Carter), a drug addict who ends up as the narrator’s love interest. The doctor of the nameless narrator refuses to treat his insomniac condition with medication, but instead refers him to visit support groups to watch other people’s suffering. The narrator did just that, he went to a variety of support groups inclusive of a group for testicular cancer victims. He pretended to be a victim and to his surprise found emotional relief. It was at one of these meetings that he came across Marla Singer who was an imposter like himself. He negotiated with her to avoid meeting at the same place (Fight Club Film). Upon his return from a business trip, he discovered that his condo had been destroyed by fire. He was devastated. Luckily for him, he had met Tyler Durden on the flight home, a homemade soap salesman who was able to host the homeless narrator at his rundown apartment. Twistedly, the severity of the narrator’s illness ma de him unaware that Tyler was a personality he created in his head and that this personality was on a mission to put an end to commercialism by whatever means. They are in fact disassociated personalities trapped in the same body. The minute the narrator is asleep; Tyler takes advantage and begins to dominate his body. In one scene, outside a club, Tyler requested that the narrator hit him and they both engaged in a fist fight. It started to get habitual for both men to have fist fights outside the club which started to draw spectators who later became members. That was the birth of the fight club and all the mayhem of this movie (Kozlowski) Sociological Concepts of the movie The many concepts of sociology are related to the many interactions and development of people. The movie provided a lot of occurrences where sociological concepts were expressed and this gave the movie some amount of substance. Five most represented sociological concepts of the movie includes; violence, groups, consumerism, commercialism and fascism.Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Violence The concept of violence was an ever present in the movie. It was used to convey and at the same time act as a symbolic metaphor of the conflict between generations and the advertised norms and folkways of society. In other words, the conflict between the generations and what is ‘expected’ of them. During the movie, the narrator knows no happiness and engages in the underground men-only boxing club, which may get really violent as a means of expressing himself. Viewers may notice also that at the start of the movie, the mentally ill narrator killed his parents, and with the influence of Tyler Durden â€Å"killed† his God and then he killed Tyler Durden who was his teacher. Groups The narrator never ideally fit into any groups in society. He felt somewhat alienated and defeated. He is desperately trying to fit in by being something he is not. This explains why he was so riveted in the establishment of the fist fighting group. In this group, shirtless men beat each other in messes of blood. His life was boring and without meaning, he spent his days at a job he despised and nights ransacking mail order catalogs feverishly trying to give his life some meaning. His illness also leads him to promote the fight club as a way to feel powerful. (Fight Club Fascist). Consumerism According to Matthew Briggs’ review on the movie, the concept of consumerism was conveyed at the time of the explosion of the narrator’s condo. The narrator related that the destruction of his condo is not just the destruction of a bunch of things but the destruction of himself as well. The movie addressed the excessive consumerism as a sign of emotional emptiness and self distinction. The movie portrays him as someone who buys things to fill his emotional voids, because he didnâ €™t have any friends or family. His possessions defined him thus giving him a consumer identity. Tyler tried to teach the narrator (who by the way is sometimes referred to as Jack) that his possessions and his job doesn’t define him as an individual. The film also asserted the fact that many individuals in society seek to replace spiritual happiness with material possessions.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Movie Review: Fight Club specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Commercialism Fincher’s adaptation of the novel showcased wildly issue of how commercialism and consumerism affected our societies. One of Tyler’s main goals in the film was to put an end to commercialism. Viewers will notice that the character’s aim had him moving rampantly about in the movie, desperate to and destroying buildings which contained financial records for credit cards in an effort to eliminate societyâ€⠄¢s debt (Interpretations of fight club). Fascism A fascist concept was also prevalent in the film ‘fight club’ and according to newspeak dictionary, the film is fascist in a sense that the violence portrayed is ideal and above the pre-existing forms of civilizations. This concept is relative to the character Tyler whose vision of the future was to return to an idealized past, not taking into consideration, the problems which that era underwent. He considers the past as an era that had no corporations; therefore there was no promotion of consumerism. To achieve this, he utilized methods such as violence and destruction. Sociological value of the movie Not the typical action movie of everyday life, â€Å"Fight Club† incorporates many of the sociological issues societies are facing. If the film’s messages are interpreted correctly, the movie can have notably and high sociological value. The storyline can be related to by many individuals who are seeking to f ind their true identity, are materialistic or even narcissist. The concepts may not always be expressed positively, but they all flowed cohesively to convey the many messages of the film. Critics bashed the movie because it overstressed the fact that the society was consumerist, but for many people who watch the film, it helps them to feel less inferior to the more accomplished classes of people. It also teaches them that their identity is not defined by their fine Giorgio Armani suit, real estate banker job title, posh condo or their extra fine Lamborghini but instead by who they are inside. The Concept of Collective Consciousness, Defined

The Concept of Collective Consciousness, Defined Collective consciousness (sometimes collective conscience or conscious) is a fundamental sociological concept that refers to the set of shared beliefs, ideas, attitudes, and knowledge that are common to a social group or society. The collective consciousness informs our sense of belonging and identity, and our behavior. Founding sociologist Émile Durkheim developed this concept to explain how unique individuals are bound together into collective units like social groups and societies. How Collective Consciousness Holds Society Together What is it that holds society together? This was the central question that preoccupied Durkheim as he wrote about the new industrial societies of the 19th century. By considering the documented habits, customs, and beliefs of traditional and primitive societies, and comparing those to what he saw around him in his own life, Durkheim crafted some of the most important theories in sociology. He concluded that society exists because unique individuals feel a sense of solidarity with each other. This is why we can form collectives and work together to achieve community and functional societies. The collective consciousness, or  conscience collective  as he wrote it in French, is the source of this solidarity. Durkheim first introduced his theory of the collective consciousness in his 1893 book The Division of Labor in Society. (Later, he would also rely on the concept in other books, including Rules of the Sociological Method, Suicide, and The Elementary Forms of Religious Life.)  In this text, he explains that the phenomenon is the totality of beliefs and sentiments common to the average members of a society. Durkheim observed that in traditional or primitive societies,  religious symbols, discourse, beliefs, and rituals fostered the collective consciousness. In such cases, where social groups were quite homogenous (not distinct by race or class, for example), the collective consciousness resulted in what Durkheim termed a mechanical solidarity - in effect an automatic binding together of people into a collective through their shared values, beliefs, and practices. Durkheim observed that in the modern, industrialized societies that characterized Western Europe and the young United States when he wrote, which functioned via a division of labor, an organic solidarity emerged based on the mutual reliance individuals and groups had on others in order to allow for a society to function. In cases such as these, religion still played an important role in producing collective consciousness among groups of people affiliated with various religions, but other social institutions and structures would also work to produce the collective consciousness necessary for this more complex form of solidarity, and rituals outside of religion would play important roles in reaffirming it. Social Institutions Produce Collective Consciousness These other institutions include the state (which fosters patriotism and nationalism), news and popular media (which spreads all kinds of ideas and practices, from how to dress, to who to vote for, to how to date and be married), education (which molds us into compliant citizens and workers), and the police and judiciary (which shape our notions of right and wrong, and direct our behavior through threat of or actual physical force), among others. Rituals that serve to reaffirm the collective conscious range from parades and holiday celebrations to sporting events, weddings, grooming ourselves according to gender norms, and even shopping (think Black Friday). In either case - primitive or modern societies - collective consciousness is something common to the whole of society, as Durkheim put it. It is not an individual condition or phenomenon, but a social one. As a social phenomenon, it is diffused across society as a whole, and has a life of its own. It is through collective consciousness that values, beliefs, and traditions can be passed down through generations. Though individual people live and die, this collection of intangible things, including the social norms connected to them, are cemented in our social institutions and thus exist independent of individual people. Most important to understand is that collective consciousness is the result of social forces that are external to the individual, that course through society, and that work together to create the social phenomenon of the shared set of beliefs, values, and ideas that compose it. We, as individuals, internalize these and  make the collective consciousness a reality by doing so, and we reaffirm and reproduce it by living in ways that reflect it.

Business Process Reengineering Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Business Process Reengineering - Essay Example Failure of the traditional approaches to effectively address the new conditions led to emergence of innovative perspectives on organizational performance and change with BPR being perhaps the most popular among them. Another distinct feature of the business environment in the early 1990s was the dramatic rise in amounts spent by businesses on information technology (IT), and the linkage between IT and BPR soon became the most popular object of research. Some studies published throughout the first half of 1990s estimated "over half of all reengineering efforts are initiated because of a perceived information technology opportunity" (Caldwell, 1994: 50), and pronounced IT to be the key enabler of effective BRP (Weicher et al, 1995). Although the linkage between IT and BPR has been confirmed repeatedly, there is no clarity as to the aspects of this linkage. The variety of opinions and views expressed in the literature is astonishing ranging from denial of the enabling role of IT in BPR to claims that IT is, in fact, the only enabler of BPR. The below overview seeks to summarise the existing conceptions about the relationship between IT and BPR in order to understand the merit of Information Technology as an enabler to Business Process Re-engineering Main Body In 1990, Michael Hammer published an article in the Harvard Business Review, in which he claimed that the major challenge for managers is to obliterate non-value adding work, rather than using technology for automating it (Hammer 1990). The article was perhaps the first attempt to draw attention of the scholarly community to the problem of information technology (IT) role in BPR. Hammer implicitly accused the management of contemporary businesses of the wrong application of IT which has been used mostly for automating existing practices than rather than revising the obsolete non-value adding ones. Hammer (1990) claims that the potential of IT makes it the most essential enabler of BPR in modern environment, but in order to fulfil the enabling function it must be used as a tool to challenge the traditional conceptions of the business processes that had emerged in the past before the advent and expansion the computer and communications technology. This will result in recognition and breaking away "from the outdated rules and fundamental assumptions underlying operations... These rules of work design are based on assumptions about technology, people, and organizational goals that no longer hold" (p.105). The elements of redesign models described in the early BRP literature illustrate why modern IT plays an important role in the reengineering concept. Hammer (1990) identifies the following basic principles of reengineering: (a) Organization around process outcomes, not tasks; (b) Those who use the output of the process must perform the process; (c) Subsume information processing work into the real work that produces the information; (d) Treat geographically dispersed resources as though they were centralized; (e) Link parallel activities instead of integrating their results; (f) Put the decision

Insect Repellant

Introduction A. Background of the Study For us, a house is a place of residence. It is usually a place in which an individual or a family can rest, store personal property, and prepare food. In able for the house to fulfill its function, we need to eliminate some factors that disturb us in doing these things. One example is the insect. One of the easiest ways to prevent insects is to use insect repellant. This is the reason why I decide to make a liquid insect repellant for my Science Investigatory Project. There are many commercially available liquid insect repellant in the market. The commonly used commercial liquid insect repellant in the Philippines is quite unaffordable and use chemical that may cause irritation. I plan to use natural ingredients in my Science Investigatory Project. Since the ingredient to be used is natural, the liquid insect repellant to be made is more affordable and environment friendly. B. Statement of the Problem Is it possible to make an effective liquid r epellant out of cacao leaves, garlic, vegetable oil, and eucalyptus oil? If it is possible, how is the price and effectiveness of it comparing to the commercially available one? C. Significance of the StudyThe study is significant to the people who want to protect their house and their love ones against insects specially those who cannot afford the commercially available insect repellant which uses chemicals. Chapter II : Review of Related Literature Chemical Repellants It is no wonder that, considering all of the above mentioned diseases, humans have worked for decades searching for a way to repel these insects. In 1946, a chemical called DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide) was developed by the US Army and released for civilian use in 1957. DEET confuses the receptors of most biting insects, rendering them virtually ‘blind’ and thus much†¦

Essay about Autism Educational and Social Effects

Autism: Educational Social Effects nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; As a student living with no impairing physical or mental disability, it is difficult to imagine life any other way. On the other hand, when taking the time to contemplate what people with disabilities, such as Autism have to cope with, I realize just how much I take for granted in every day life; such as options to any class, learning at a normal pace, and peer interactions, to name a few. Autism not only affects people physically, but socially as well, ensuing subordinate self esteem, meager social skills, and poor peer relationships, aspects of maturing which are crucial to proper development. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;A child with disabilities is presented with two†¦show more content†¦Many parents even felt inclusion was a violation of their rights to be thoroughly involved in the planning and decisions of their child’s education process (Wong 3). But what do the children think? nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;A case study was conducted by Brenda Myles and Richard Simpson on the behavior and interaction of children with Autism when integrated with children of normal learning abilities. They integrated four children into an all autistic classroom, and monitored behaviors such as asking questions, requesting help, social interactions, aggression, complaining, and frustration (Myles, Simpson 5). The results were clear. When given the opportunity, Autistic children socially interacted with others 54% of the time when normally developed children were present as opposed to 71% of the time when it was just the Autistic children, they were obviously intimidated (Myles, Simpson 5).
